What Are Nasal Polyps?
Nasal polyps are painless, non-cancerous growths that form in the lining of the nose and paranasal sinuses. These soft, immovable, grape-like structures are typically pale, glistening, and lack sensation, pain, or bleeding. They can be multiple or bilateral and may enlarge over time.
Types of Nasal Polyps
- Bilateral Ethmoidal Polyps – Develop from the ethmoid sinuses and are more common.
- Antrochoanal Polyps – Originate from the maxillary sinuses, are usually unilateral, and less frequent.
Causes of Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps commonly result from chronic inflammation caused by:
- Chronic Rhinitis
- Sinusitis
- Asthma
- Aspirin Intolerance
- Fluid accumulation within nasal tissues, leading to swelling and polyp formation
Symptoms of Nasal Polyps
- Nasal Congestion & Stuffy Nose
- Loss of Smell & Taste (Partial or Complete)
- Frequent Sneezing & Runny Nose
- Headache & Sinus Pressure
- Snoring & Breathing Difficulties
- Pain in the Upper Teeth Region
Diagnosis & Treatment
- Medications: Steroid nasal sprays and other anti-inflammatory drugs help shrink polyps.
- Surgical Treatment (Polypectomy): In severe cases, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery is performed for polyp removal.
- Comprehensive ENT Care: Advanced diagnostic tools and treatment plans ensure long-term relief.
