Bilateral Vestibulopathy

Bilateral Vestibulopathy: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Bilateral vestibulopathy (BV) is a condition where both inner ears lose their ability to regulate balance, leading to difficulties in walking and vision problems. Patients often experience increased imbalance in low-light conditions or when they are unsure of their foot placement. The resulting dizziness can cause mental distress and anxiety, affecting daily activities.

Causes of Bilateral Vestibulopathy

Several factors can contribute to bilateral vestibulopathy, including:

  • Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED)
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Tumors
  • Head Trauma
  • Ototoxicity (damage from medications)
  • Migraines
  • Hereditary Factors
  • Aging (a natural cause)
  • Siderosis (iron buildup in tissues)

Among these, ototoxic medications are a leading cause, particularly in older adults.

Symptoms of Bilateral Vestibulopathy

The most common symptoms include:

  • Balance Problems: Difficulty walking, especially in the dark or on uneven ground.
  • Oscillopsia (Visual Blurring): Blurred vision when moving the head.
  • Dizziness and Mental Distress: Feeling disoriented, anxious, or unsteady.

If you experience these symptoms, it’s crucial to consult an ENT specialist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
